Your Letter Edit I am grateful that the Florida legislature passed legislation to protect Florida homeowners from assignment of benefits (AOB) abuse and help control rising insurance rates statewide. Now, however, lawmakers should finish the job and pass legislation that also protects consumers from auto glass AOB abuse as well. Auto glass AOB lawsuits are out-of-control in Florida -- in fact, they have nearly quadrupled since 2013. In most cases, auto policyholders are targeted in parking lots and at car washes for windshield replacements and have no idea they are signing an AOB when they agree to repairs. These shady auto glass shops then team up with shady trial lawyers to file lawsuits in policyholders' names---usually without their knowledge or consent---against their insurers. Not only do these auto glass scams target consumers and result in unnecessary litigation, but they can drive up costs and increase auto insurance premiums. Making matters worse, the vast majority of these frivolous lawsuits come from only a handful of law firms. In fact, 60 percent of all lawsuits filed by auto glass shops come from only four firms -- and about a dozen file nearly 100 percent of all lawsuits. This is a well-organized scheme, not the result of some widespread problem. It is time for the Florida legislature to finish the job it started and pass consumer protections against auto glass AOB abuse. It's time to end the auto glass scam in Florida once and for all. Thank you for your consideration.
